The Triple Package by Amy Chua—4/19/2014(58 pages read)

I have been reading about the second item of the triple package, “insecurity”, in all of America’s most successful groups, people tend to feel insecure, inadequate, and have the need to prove themselves. Mormons have a tradition of being persecuted for their beliefs. During the restoration of the Church Mormons were attack by mobs and driven out of their homes. Mormons were not welcome or trusted in America society. They had to prove themselves by working hard and smart to be included in main stream society.

Similarly, the first Cuban immigrants, who arrived at the shores of the United States of America, were not liked because of the great numbers, their poverty and because they didn’t speak English. They were professionals and elites forced by Fidel Castro to abandon their property, businesses, social status, and political connections.  Many of them were used to living in mansions and having servants. Some of them were doctors, engineers, and because they didn’t speak English; they had to take jobs that didn’t require an education, such dishwasher, house cleaning, janitor and yard keeping. This loss of status cause great insecurity in the Cuban immigrants which push them into hard work and more risk taking, and as a result of these they went from poverty to great prosperity in one generation.

More recently, after the terrorist attack of 9/11, there was an anti-Arab Muslim hostility so Iranians choose to be identified as Persians rather than Arab Muslims, tying themselves to the ancient great power of Persia instead of the terrorist extreme Muslims.  Iranians also try to prove themselves to be civilized so maybe that it one reason why they hold more masters and doctorate degrees than any other group in America.

The Triple Package by Amy Chua—4/30/2014(64 pages read)

I have been reading about the third part of the triple package which is Impulse Control. Amy Chua defines Impulse control as the ability to resist temptation, especially the temptation to give up in the face of hardship or temptation to quit a difficult task.

America today spreads a message of immediate gratification, living for the moment.  For example many people chose fast food instead of taking the time to buy and cook food; some people chose to buy thing on credit instead of taking the time to save money and pay for items with cash; many chose to have party and have fun instead of studying and working for a better future. But the most successful groups in America cultivate heightened discipline and impulse control. For example Asians and Asian-Americans make up more than 50% of the students at America’s prestigious Juilliard School of Music, and 19% at Harvard, Princeton and Yale University’s. Amy Chua believes this is because the way Asians and Asian American are raise. The parents of these students are stricter about homework time, musical instrument practice time and in general study time.  These students are expected spend many more hours of homework and study than other American students and they do. Their parents also limit the time student spend having fun. There is no such thing as hanging out with friends. They also limit computer games time and other personal entertainments. Some families don’t even own televisions.

“Dr. and Novelist Khaled Hosseini once was asked What are the Qualities to get through Medical school? Discipline.  Patience.  Perseverance. A wiliness to forgo sleep… the Ability to weather crises of faith and self-confidence.  Accept exhaustion as a fact of life. Asked about the qualities required to be a novelist, he said Ditto.”
The message of this book seems to be that America is still the land of opportunity, and if we are willing to work hard because we want to prove ourselves superior and have a strong self-control or because any other reason we will be rewarded with success

The Triple Package by Amy Chua—4/12/2014(50 pages read)

I have been reading about what the triple package is and why the most successful people have this triple package.    According to the Amy Chua the author of this book, people are not successful because of their race, religion or nationality. The secret of their success is the way they are raise, how they feel about themselves, their experiences growing up and their ability to self-control.  In American we are taught that everyone is equal, that no group is superior to another. But according to Amy Chua, America’s most successful groups believe, even if they don’t say so aloud, that they’re exceptional, chosen, and superior in some way. For example the Jews grow up with the belief that they are the “chosen people”, a feeling their faith instils in them.  Mormons also grow up believing something similar.  Iranians have a superiority complex because they are descendants from Persians, one of the most successful empires in history.  Asians and Asian-Americans also come from one of the oldest and most successful empires. Others successful groups have a superiority complex which in the author defined as “a deeply internalize belief in that group’s specialness, exceptionality, or superiority”.  This superiority complex could also come from having already been successful. An example of this was the first Cuban immigrants who were professionals and elites who were forced to abandon their property, business, social status and political connection to save their lives and come to a Miami in America.  The superiority complex seem to be an internalize idea of having to live up to a higher standard than anyone else,

The Triple Package by Amy Chua—4/1/2014(50 pages read)

Today I read about how some groups in America do better than others in areas of academics test scores, business and income. According to this book, the reason why some people do better in those areas is because they all have a something in common; the author calls this the triple package. The triple package is a set of three characteristics a superiority complex, insecurity, and impulse control. Groups with the triple package are making more money, getting the best scores on college placement test and are being admitted to the top music schools; they are getting top management jobs and are creating and growing businesses.

According to this book, it is not race, ethnicity or social status that determines success; people are not born with intelligence to achieve success. It is a culture that includes the triple package that can almost guarantee success in America. America was built by people who had the triple package. They had the superiority complex so they wanted freedom and rights. They had insecurities for being outcasts form other countries. And they had impulse control because of their religious believes.

Some people claim that upward mobility in America is dead, that is that kids cannot expect to be better financially than their parents. But group that have the triple package are still moving up, and doing better than their parents in business, politics and finances. Such immigrants and children of immigrants have more successful startup business.  Mormons have been recently being notice for taking top management position in business and in politics; they are wealthier than other religious groups. Cubans escape their country leaving all their property behind, arriving to Miami unable to speak English and in one generation they went from poverty to prosperity.  Jews have higher income than any other group of people.  I didn’t notice before how some groups of people do better than other but this book has a lot demographic and statistical data to support their claims.

Page 8-The Hero has won the Freedom to Live

Odysseus goes back to Ithaca. Athena disguises him as an old beggar so that he can see who is still loyal. He and his son take all the armor and they fight all the suitors. They win the fight and take back Ithaca. He proves that he is the real Odysseus because he know about the bed tree.

Page 7-The Hero Crosses the Return Threshold

When Odysseus returns to Ithaca it is a very troubling scene. His wife is losing hope that he will come back. The suitors are trying to marry his wife. His son is is going to be assassinated. His home is overrun with suitors. My world is in a state of chaos right now cause all my grades are bad.

Page 6- The Hero receives the goal of his quest

Odysseus probably would not have survived if he didn't have Penelope. Penelope is Odysseus's wife. Odysseus's thought of Penelope helps him to carry on. He probably would have gotten lost in the road of trials. My goal is to get a car. I willing to work all summer to buy one.

Page 5-The Hero Fights a Symbolic Dragon

The encounter with the cyclops results in the lost of 6 men. They land on the island searching for food. They found a cave with much food in it. The cyclops eats some of the men and they figure out a way to get out. I have face an obstacle when I had to take a pop test in science I use my memorizing skills and memorize all the 25 answers in 10 minutes.

Page 4-The Hero Follows a Road of Trials

I think that the lotus eaters symbol applies to everyone. They arrive at the land of the lotus eaters Odysseus know that they can't eat the lotus. Two of Odysseus's men taste the lotus flower. They have to drag both of them back to the boat. They don't lose any men at that island. I experience distraction when I have work to do and I have other thing going on.

page 3-The belly of the whale

They arrived at troy and they fight for nine years. The Greeks were losing so they retreated. Also Achilles died at the Trojan war. They decided to build a horse and attack the Trojans at night when they were all drunk and asleep. I have had many experiences that have frightened me. One experience is when I have to take a hard test in school I just study hard and try my best.

Page 2-The Hero Meets a Protector

Odysseus's protector is Athena. Athena is a goddess. she helps Odysseus and is on the side of the greeks. she help him when they were trapped in the cave with the cyclops. She guided the cattle so that they could get out. I have been help by my parents when I projects and things.

Page 1-The call to adventure

Odysseus's call to adventure is when the king of Greece tell him that he has to fight. The come to Ithaca and tell him that there is gonna be a war. They say that they need him to fight and to form an army. The call came to him at a time when they just had a son. I think that he sacrificed everything when he went to war. He sacrifice time with his son. I have been called to do my eagle project.

The Trojan War

I don't really know much about the Trojan war. but what i do know is that there was a big horse. There was also people inside the horse I think. I learned that there was a big wall surrounding troy I learned that there was a person named Helen. Helen started the the whole war. Paris was chosen to choose someone to give the apple to, he chose Aphrodite offer and he got Helen but they had to steal her so that started the war.

                                   Ender’s shadow-Orson Scott Card February 1 (50)

This week I read about Bean choosing Enders battle team. Bean includes himself in Ender team.  Sister Carlotta finds out why Bean is so intelligent. She finds out that Bean is part of a genetic experiment to create super human intelligent babies.  A scientist discovers a way to make humans super intelligent but with a very short life span.  Another scientist illegally alters 23 clone babies to make them super intelligent. Most of the babies are destroyed, except for Bean who escapes by hiding.  A   young couple  help him for a while but, they are not allow to have children so they send him away when they think the government may find  about they having a baby.  Sister Carlotta tries to find where the scientist got the original baby to clone the other babies so that she can find Beans real parent.

This explains a lot, Bean is not a natural intelligent kid; he was genetically engineered to be smart. I wonder if that is possible in real life today.  I also wonder is someone would really choose to create have a super intelligent baby even if their life was going to be very short.

In Battle school Bean meets Nikolai Delphiki, another student. They become best friends, Bean can talk to Nikolai. Bean includes Nikolai in Ender team, even though Nikolai is not as good as the others. Sister Carlotta discovers that Nikolai Delphiki and Bean have the same parents so they are brothers. Ender seems to treat Bean the same way that Ender was treated by General Graff. He makes sure the other know Bean is the smartest in the team. This makes Bean uneasy.

                                           Ender's shadow-Orson Scott Card February 1 (45)

I have been reading Ender’s shadow. This week I read about Bean in the Battle school. He tries to lean as much as he can about other students.  He also tries to hide as much information as he cans about himself because he does not trust other people. He doesn’t participate in many of the games that the school uses to study kids personalities and minds. Instead, he spends his time reading and going into the vent system to look around the battle school without been seen. He spies and listens to other students, teachers and other leader in the school. He also manages to steal a teacher’s password to the school computer system and he’s able to read files and information on many students. He is most interested in Ender Wiggin. He totally avoids interacting with Ender, but at the same time he studies him intensely. He tells Major Anderson that the reason he avoids him is because everyone compare him with Ender. They were both very young when they started at Battle school and they are both the smartest kids in Battle school. But ender is different from Bean because People like Ender, they admire him. Ender teaches what he knows to other students, even the new kids.  He seems spend more time teaching others in the battle room than working to prepared himself. Everyone looks up to Ender Even the teachers admire Ender. Bean wants to be like Ender. He wants to be a leader. So he tries to study Ender from far away and in secret.

                                          Ender's shadow-Orson Scott Card February 1 (28)

Today I started Ender shadow. The book starts by introducing several children including Bean, the main character in the book. The children are orphans and live on the street. They are hungry and fight for food. They organize themselves in group with a leader and a protector. The leaders have to be very mean and violent. They fight for the little food they can find. The fights are very violent and one kid name Achilles even kills a girl name Poke. Bean is very small and that is the reason they kids named him bean. He is also very smart. That’s why Sister Carlotta notices him in a soup kitchen. She decides to test him to see how smart he is. But he cannot read or write. So she teaches him and in the process she realizes that he’s very intelligent. Eventually she asked General Hyrum Graff to test him for Battle school.  Graff finally agrees to test Bean and he scores perfect in the entire test except the physical test. So he is qualified to attend battle school in space.
I think it is very hard for somebody so small to survive on the streets and also to be so smart.  It’s also strange to think of kids living on the street all the time.  Bean found a way to survive by observing people on the street, he developed social intelligence. Later Sister Carlotta taught him reading, writing, math and other academics.  Bean goes to battle school and he is very different than the other kids. But he has always been alone. He is always on the defense observing other people to be able to survive.

                                                             Wish You Were Here
I think that this was written as a tribute to someone. I think that the singer is talking about someone in this song. I think that the singer wishes that one of his friends that left were still here. I think that that the singer is trying to tell them that what they did was wrong and that even though they think that they are right they're wrong. This song shows a metaphor when it says two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl. It also has a rhyme scheme though out the poem.

                                                                           The Raven
This poem talks about how this guy is going crazy. I think that the guy is in deep despair. It think that the raven represent the guys feeling. I think the bird is himself answering his own questions.
this poem shows a rhyme scheme.

blog 2 term 3 poem #2

                                                                Sonnet 130
I think that this poem's meaning is that the guy who is talking loves whoever he's talking about despite what they look like. I think that he thinks that it is special that he feels that way. I don't really get it but it sounds like it makes sense. this poems a rhyme scheme every other last word on the line rhyme. I think that this poem kind of shows signs of a simile when is says Their eyes are nothing like the sun.

blog 2 term 3 poem #1

                                                              Casey at the bat
I think that this poem show that we shouldn't be too confidant. I thin that it is ok to be confidant but not over confidant. In this poem Casey was so confidant that he would win the game for everyone that he didn't swing the first two times but at the last chance he had he choked. So I think that this teaches us that we should take advantage of every chance we have and not be so sure of ourselves.
This poem shows rhyme scheme. The last words of each sentence rhyme.

Poem 2

                                                                     Pride-U2
I think that this song is talking a lot about Martin Luther king junior. I think it's talking about in general people who die for what they believe in. I think it's  talking about people who die for other people. The song is asking the question how many more people need to die before people realize what's right. I think that the reason it's called pride is because people can kill people like MLK but they can't take away their legacy. The song shows allusion when it refers to Martin Luther king junior.

Poem 1

                                                                  Cough Syrup- young the giant
I this that this song is talking about a persons problems. I think that the cough syrup that the song is talking about is the person temporary remedy. I think that it's temporary because cough syrup doesn't cure a disease but it provides temporary relief. I think that his sickness is depression. This poem has alliteration when it says "my mind". I think that this poem also shows personification when it says "a wet world aches for a beat of a drum" and " a dark world aches for a splash of the sun".

The Olympics  in Sochi Russia began this week. They seem to be having some problems. Some of the athletes and news reporters have complained about the condition of the hotels. I want to see the athletes compete. I'm excited to see the athletes compete because they have trained for years. I like to watch the down hill skiing. I also like to watch the speed skating. I think it's amazing how fast the speed skater go. I hope that some day they bring the Olympics back to Salt Lake.

It started one time but the engine got flooded. just a few month ago we had to replace the tires. This car takes a lot of maintenance. I have to walk home from school everyday know.

Final thoughts on Martin Luther King

Final thought on Martin Luther King
I think that Martin Luther king accomplished a lot. I know know that he said the most of the Dream speech without any paper. I learned that he organized a bunch of non-violent protests. Martin Luther was against all violence. I learned that martin Luther king was always in fear of being assassinated. I learned that many people didn't like him. J. Edgar hoover was always stalking Martin Luther King. I learned that the president supported Martin Luther king. I learned that Martin Luther King was assassinated just outside of his hotel room.

                                                              Into thin Air--12/20/13(50)
I read a lot of history about Mount Everest more than I ever thought possible. But, it was interesting to read how a well plan expedition with expert guides run into trouble so easily. Climber Jon Krakauer and a group people were at the top of the mountain; Jon Krakauer had reached the summit and was descending, and others were on their way to reach the summit. During their climb, they got separated from their guides. Krakauer, his guide, and another climber ran out of oxygen and all were caught in a sudden blizzard, in which several climbers died. Some of Krakauer’s friends died, including his guide Rob Hall. I think this disaster could have been avoided if the climbers had turned back when they knew it was getting late. Two o’clock was the time they needed to turn back, no matter where they were. But being so close to the summit, and having invested so much money and time, and having already endured so much hardship, it seemed logical to them to push forward.  They were the type of people willing to take extreme risks, and so some paid with their lives. Was it worth it? Maybe it was for some of them, like Doug Hansen, who was a postal worker and held two jobs to pay for his dream of reaching the summit of Mount Everest. It might’ve been worth it for guide Rob Hall as well, who was getting paid. For him it was a job, just like it was for the sherpas. Even though some people think it is safe to climb Mount Everest because of technology, the climb is still high-risk because of extreme and unpredictable weather.

                                                                      Into Thin Air--12/10/13(50)
This week I have been reading “Into thin Air”  I read more about the expedition to Mount Everest, during this expedition, Krakauer studied what made people take so much risk to climb to the summit. He also saw how much money people were willing to spend and how much hardships people like him were willing to endure to make it to the summit. Mount Everest has a harsh environment. It is mostly covered with ice and snow. At high altitudes there are strong winds and very little oxygen to breathe. It is extremely cold; at the summit; and can drop to-76°. The Climbing conditions are very dangerous, slippery ice, cliffs, and crevasses can make the trail deadly.  As if climbing a tall, snowy and icy mountain wasn’t dangerous enough, people got sick. Krakauer developed a cough that became a constant source of pain. Later, he also developed a migraine headache that had to be treated with medication.  I also read that Mount Everest is part of the Himalaya mountain range between the Asian continent and the Indian subcontinent. Mount Everest has the highest elevation on earth at 29,035 feet above sea level. Mount Everest is a part of two nations: China and Nepal. This region is home to the Sherpa people; they speak Sherpa and Nepali. Sherpa people of Nepal help mountain climbers get to the summit of Mount Everest, and many have died doing this. With the improvement in climbing technology many more people are joining expeditions to get to the summit. But still, because of unpredictable weather, people die and they are left in the mountain because it’s very expensive to bring bodies down of the mountains in helicopters.

                                                            Into Thin Air--11/1/13(130)

I started reading the book “Into Thin Air”. I read about Krakauer  going to a Mount Everest climbing expedition that started out with great excitement and expectations but turned out to be one of the worst disasters the mountain had ever seen. Jon Krakauer planned to go to base camp and write an article for a sports magazine. The article was going to be about the commercialization of sherpas taking tourists to the top of the mountain. Instead, he decided to climb the mountain himself, and his story turned out to be of a group of climbers whose goal was to make it safely to the summit of Mount Everest and back. The group of climbers was divided into different companies with different guides. Some of the climbers and guides were experienced and well prepared for the challenge, but others were not ready for the dangers that they would soon face. Some of them were older; one was a 47 year old woman. Krakauer was an experienced climber himself, but since he hadn’t climbed at high altitudes, he hired the best guide in the world, Rob Hall, to take him to the highest mountain in the world. Krakauer achieves his childhood dream of making it to the summit of Mount Everest. But on his way back down the mountain, the narrow trail was crowded by other climbers who were barely going up to the summit. The crowds delayed some climbers on their way, and to make things worse, a strong storm moved in as well, making many people lose their way and their lives.

                                                          Ender Game--12/11/13(150)
This week I read about how Graf tells Ender that he is the smartest of all the kids on the launch and it make the other kids not like ender. Once they get into the battle school in space he finds out that he is the youngest. Other kids are still trying to pick on him. He breaks into message system and makes fun of the leader of the bully kids. The kid get introduce to the null gravity battle room. They are clumsy in the room but they enjoy it. They realize that they need to push off of objects to get around. In the battle room they divide into groups to fight with laser guns that freeze them. Ender is assigned to a group called salamander. The commander of the salamander group is named Bonzo. Bonzo is mean to Ender and thinks that he is just going to interfere with his team.  Ender is smart and helps them win even though they don’t want him to help. Bonzo told Ender not to join the battle but Ender did anyway and they won. Bonzo wants beat him up.  Later Ender plays a game on his desk device and in the game he is a rat and there is a giant. He kills the giant in the game. A bunch of mice make a house out of the giant. Then the rats turn into wolfs with children’s faces and they want to attack Ender. The game is connected to Ender’s mind.

                                                    Ender's Game--12/3/13(95 pages read)

I just started reading Ender's Game. This book is about a boy named Ender Wiggin who is about six years old and is in a military like school.  One day Ender gets his monitor taken off. The monitor is a device installed in the back of his neck that monitors everything about him. The monitors know what he feels, sees and hears. One day they take off his monitor. The older boys decide that they want to beat him up because his monitor is gone and there is no one to help him. The older boys call him names and start to push him around then they held him. Ender pointed out how it took a whole bunch of them to beat him up.  They let go of Ender. As soon as they let go he kicks the leader and kills him. He threatened the other kids that if they try to beat him up he would do the same to them. In the next chapters Ender goes home and believes that he failed school because they took his monitor off. Everybody thinks that Ender failed. His brother peter makes fun of him because he is a third child and is useless. Peter is mean to Ender and tortures him physically and mentally. Enders sister valentine is nice to Ender. While they are having a family dinner General Graf comes to the house to take Ender to battle school in space. Ender family at first thinks that Ender is in trouble for beating up the kid. Ender said that he wanted to all the next fights not just that one.

When I was making it I decided to paint it blue. I bought some paints on the Internet and they took two weeks to arrive. I was worried that I wouldn't have enough time to build it. Once I got the paints it took me four weeks just to get the 10 coats of paint because I had to paint it then wait a week the sand it and then put the next coat on. Thoughts on courage

                                Thoughts On Courage

I think that courage is hard to get. I think that everyone can have courage but don't show it. Courage is the opposite of cowardliness. Courage is not just about being brave it's about knowing when to be brave and when not to be. I think that courage is also about not being scared to do the right thing. Courage is also about standing up for the right thing.

Childhood Memory

                                    Childhood Memory

I remember when I was little I was riding my bike and I rode by to a retaining wall next to my house. I remember that I fell of the retaining wall all the way down the hill to my neighbors yard. I remember that one of my neighbors found me a few minutes later. I had to go to the doctors office. I didn't break anything but I had a lot of cuts and bruises. It hurt and was pretty scary. I never rode my bike near that retaining wall again.

Civilized

                                           CIVILIZED

I think to be civilized means to know how other people feel. I think that killing people for fun is not civilized. I think that working together with other people is civilized. For example most wild animals are not civilized because they kill other animals.

Bucket list

                                                     BUCKET LIST
One of the things in my bucket list is to fly a stunt plane. I would like to fly to fly a stunt plane because I have flown remote control airplanes and I think that they would be very similar to fly. Plus I like airplanes and I have haven't flown one yet. I also think it be a cool thing to do for a bucket list. I think that I could fly but I can't that would be okay because it's my bucket list.

Sibling rivalry

                                                            SIBLINGS
I am the youngest in my family, My oldest brother is twenty seven yours old. My youngest sibling is 17 years old. None of my siblings are mean to me. I not usually mean to them either. I think that they are to old to pick on me. My sister is the only person who is unkind to me sometimes.

Pride

                                                                     PRIDE
I think that pride could be a good thing or a bad thing. Pride is a bad thing when your proud of yourself and look down on other people. Having pride about your possessions is also a bad thing. I think a little pride is good thing your proud of someone else. Having a lot of pride is never good. So pride is both a good thing and a bad thing.
