Into Thin Air--12/10/13(50)
This week I have been reading “Into thin Air” I read more about the expedition to Mount
Everest, during this expedition,
Krakauer studied what made people take so much risk to climb to the summit. He
also saw how much money people were willing to spend and how much hardships people
like him were willing to endure to make it to the summit. Mount Everest has a
harsh environment. It is mostly covered with ice and snow. At high altitudes
there are strong winds and very little oxygen to breathe. It is extremely cold;
at the summit; and can drop to-76°. The Climbing conditions are very dangerous,
slippery ice, cliffs, and crevasses can make the trail deadly. As if climbing a tall, snowy and icy mountain
wasn’t dangerous enough, people got sick. Krakauer developed a cough that
became a constant source of pain. Later, he also developed a migraine headache
that had to be treated with medication. I also read that Mount Everest is part of the Himalaya
mountain range between the Asian continent and the Indian subcontinent. Mount
Everest has the highest elevation on earth at 29,035 feet above sea level. Mount
Everest is a part of two nations: China and Nepal. This region is home to the
Sherpa people; they speak Sherpa and Nepali. Sherpa people of Nepal help mountain climbers get to the
summit of Mount Everest, and many have died doing this. With the improvement in
climbing technology many more people are joining expeditions to get to the
summit. But still, because of unpredictable weather, people die and they are
left in the mountain because it’s very expensive to bring bodies down of the
mountains in helicopters.
